When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?

Timing is everything when it comes to newborn photography. Here's everything you need to know about when to book, when to schedule, and what to expect during your session.

When to Book: During Pregnancy

The best time to book your newborn session is during your second or third trimester—ideally around weeks 28-34. This ensures you secure your spot on my calendar, as newborn photographers often book up months in advance.

When you book, we'll tentatively schedule your session for about 1-2 weeks after your due date. Once baby arrives, you'll let me know and we'll confirm the exact date based on the actual birth.

The Ideal Age for Newborn Photos: 5-14 Days

The "golden window" for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, babies are:

  • Sleepier – They'll snooze through most of the session
  • More flexible – They curl into those adorable poses naturally
  • Still "womb-like" – They haven't developed baby acne or colic yet
  • Easier to soothe – White noise and swaddling work like magic

After 2 weeks, babies become more alert, less curly, and harder to pose. While we can absolutely still capture beautiful photos of older newborns, the style shifts to more awake, lifestyle-focused images.

What Happens During a Newborn Session?

Newborn sessions at Studio 11:11 in Bay View typically last 2-3 hours. Here's what to expect:

  • Feeding and settling: We start by letting baby eat and settle in
  • Baby-only portraits: Swaddled poses, basket setups, and details like tiny toes
  • Parent and sibling photos: Sweet moments with mom, dad, and older siblings
  • Breaks as needed: We pause for feeding, changing, and soothing throughout

The studio is kept warm and cozy (around 80°F) to keep baby comfortable. I have white noise playing, and everything is sanitized and safe.

How to Prepare for Your Session

For baby: A full feeding right before the session helps them sleep soundly. Dress them in something easy to remove (zip-up sleepers are perfect).

For parents: Wear solid, neutral colors. Get rest if you can (I know, easier said than done with a newborn!). Don't worry about having a perfectly clean house if we're doing an in-home session—I'll guide you to the best spots.

What to bring: Extra diapers, wipes, a change of clothes for baby, and any special items you'd like included (heirloom blankets, stuffed animals, etc.).

What If Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Babies come on their own schedule! If your little one arrives early, we'll move your session up. If they're late, we'll adjust accordingly. I always leave flexibility in my newborn calendar because I know due dates are just estimates.
